Roundabout: Motorway Technology that is Saving Precious Energy

Recent years have seen an increase in the number of roundabouts all over the world, especially in Europe and some parts of America. There are a couple of reasons for, the main reason is practical and useful for your car and general traffic in the city. What’s so special about them? Why where they invented?

The Roundabout was a type of critical junction designed in the eighteenth century. The crossroad is more famous of the two. Among the first uses of the circular junction done in the town of Bath in the UK, and after that it was used in a couple of places in Europe around specific monuments, and other public spaces that needed this type of solution. Other famous examples are the circuit that’s around the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Columbus circus in Manhattan.

The Technology of The Roundabout

In the 60es scientist from the United Kingdom that worked in the Transport Research Laboratory started work on ways to re-engineer the existing circuit construction so that it can be better suited for mas car transit. What they figured out is that the circuit is better suited for road construction because it does not slow down the traffic so much, and therefore creates a better flow of traffic in general.

But before we get thru the other features that are present in the use of the roundabout we want to mention its way of construction and the elements that make it. In places where roads junction an island is constructed and around it is placed a circular road that allows the traffic to flow in one way. The circuit itself has multiple paces for cars to enter and exit. The traffic flow is directed so that the cars in the circuit have priority over the ones that want to enter.

Mass usage of the roundabout in the United States and in other Countries in Europe didn’t start until the 1990s when it was discovered that they have significant advantages when compared to conventional crossroads with stop lights. The Public was first skeptical about the new adaption to the road system, but it couth on quickly after its efficiency was proven.

The Advantages of a Roundabout

First of all, it saves a lot of energy, because there is no need for stop lights and therefore no reason for expensive signaling systems that have both costs of maintaining and running this is one of the main reasons they are inefficient. The traffic, on the other hand, does not stop in the circuit and on conventional crossroads, this occurs every couple of minutes. This way if the traffic flow is not too strong there will be no need for stopping your car you will just pas, save full, and not pollute so much.

The other benefit is that they make our cities and villages look more beautiful. The island in the center of the circuit has been used in creative ways and adapted to reflect local traditions and landscape designs.
